Is this a brand new computer? or did you just install a new operating system on an older computer? If the latter, did the line appear immediately after the install?
A solid black line at the top of the screen is not normal. There are several possibilities as to why it is occurring.
If you insert your install DVD and boot from it (restart the computer and hold down the C key during startup) is the issue still present? If so, the issue is definitely with your hardware.
